On Sunday 6 October, picturesque Bruges will be transformed into a runners’ paradise again. Everything will be even prettier, bigger and better for the seventh edition of the Athora Great Bruges Marathon … and who knows maybe even faster. The flat course – with lots of kilometres through the centre of town – is ideal for setting a personal record. Registration opens on Friday 11am.

Athora Belgium, specialist in savings and pension insurance, is the event’s title sponsor for the seventh year in a row. The success of the Athora Great Bruges Marathon grows year after year. In October last year, over 7,000 participants were able to enjoy their run around and across Bruges on a revamped course, making it a record-breaking edition. In 2024, the Athora Great Bruges Marathon aims for an even better and bigger experience.

The start will again be at ‘t Zand, in the shadow of Bruges’ Concert Hall. After the starting shot, the course meanders through the beautiful Bruges city centre, followed by a well-received passage through the charming medieval splendour of Damme and the stretch along Damme Canal. The finish is traditionally on Bruges’ magical Market Square. Participants finish with a view of the majestic Belfry. There is no setting more beautiful to complete your final metres.

The full course will be announced later this year, but it is no secret that the participants will be able to enjoy the most beautiful views along the way despite the drops of sweat. In that respect, the course will be a copy of the 2023 one for the most part. Moreover, the Athora Great Bruges Marathon is an ideal race to improve your personal record thanks to it being so flat.

Runners can choose between two distances: the mythical marathon and the challenging half marathon. Walkers can opt for the 8km Family Walk, allowing participants to enjoy delicious culinary treats along the way.

Franky Demon, Alderman for Sport Bruges: “The Bruges Marathon is a household name in our city, but also far beyond. As a Unesco World Heritage city, Bruges offers a magnificent setting for this sports event. Last year’s new course for runners and walkers offered a double passage through Bruges’ historic city centre and a loop through picturesque Damme for the first time. And that turned out to be a great success. For the first time, more than 7,000 participants registered, a record. We obviously hope to do as well in 2024. The atmosphere and unique backdrop make the Athora Great Bruges Marathon one of the most beautiful marathons in Europe!”
